Happy Friday! Here is your kindergarten update:
Reading:
We are working on CVC words, "at" family, syllables, and reading our beginner books. We have been working on beginner readers that the students color and keep for a few months. We have these books in a special place to practice everyday. This week the students each received their first classroom beginning reader! This is a book that they are practicing everyday and will bring home to share with you! They will return this book and I will give them a new book to practice . They are very excited about this! I will let you know what day they bring this home!
Writing:
January is always a big month in kindergarten for writing! They are doing so well and you can probably start to decipher their writing work without my notes ;) We continue to work on our daily journals and build on writing skills. The student have a checklist on the back of their journal pages now that they must review everyday after they write. I am so proud of their new writing skills and cannot wait to send home their January journals!
Math:
The exciting math lesson of the week was learning how to use a calculator! It was so cute to see their excitement when they go the right answer from challenging problems I was giving :) We are also working on counting to 50 by 1's, 100 by 10's, Comparing numbers (greater than/less than), bundling 10's, and recognizing and writing numbers 1-20.
Theme:
This week we read The Mitten by Jan Brett and practiced retelling the story. The kids are doing a great job at retelling and talking about beginning and endings. Next week we will add middle, characters, and setting!
Have a great weekend!

We have been busy in Kindergarten and this update is long overdue!
Community Helpers Unit (Social Studies)- November
The kids loved this unit! We learned about different jobs in our community. Our guest speakers included a chef , Fire Dept. and police officer.
We also learned about doctors and set up a doctors office in our classroom. The kids love this area and seem to have a lot of their own knowledge about IV's and breathing treatments. However, the funniest story yet... We have a board with x-rays. The students moved the board over the "hospital bed" and then had a student lay down. When I asked what they were doing, they looked at me like I should know and said " He's getting a scan!" So I guess they also specialize in MRI's and CT scans :)
December-Holiday Celebrations
Is this month really over?! We were busy in kindergarten making and catching gingerbread men, learning the difference between needs and wants, and traveling on The Polar Express! I love their happy spirits during this month!
January-Winter and Snow
We are ready to be back after a refreshing break! The kids missed their friends and we had a great day sharing our vacation memories. It is going to take a week or so to get back into routine, so don't be surprised if you have an extra tired kiddo this week! We will ease back into everything as we are begin many new skills this month!
Math- counting to 50 by 1's, reading #'s 1-20, greater/less than, word problems, graphing, counting by 5's, writing numbers 11-20.
